1 Samuel 17:2-4 – 2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines. 3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them. 4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
The Philistines went into the valley of Elah confident, even cocky. They thought their champion, Goliath, was more powerful than anything the Israelites could ever bring against them. With such formidable help on their side, they had no reason to fear the Israelites. They could go into battle almost entirely assured of victory.
We should also be as self-assured as the Philistines. Though we go into a valley of battle, we can remain calm, because our help is more powerful than anything the opposition can throw at us. The most powerful force in the universe has promised never to leave us and to always help us. He is our shield, buckler, and our defense. From our physical to our emotional well-being, nothing escapes His care.
With our Helper beside us, we have no reason to be afraid. The King of Kings is our ally, our champion, and our strong tower. Because of Him, we can boldly go forward, without fear and assured of victory.
