1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – 19 What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Because we are not our own, it is not up to us to decide how to treat our bodies. Our Saviour paid with His life to redeem us, and we are His. In addition to that, we have quite a high calling. Our bodies are temples, dwelling places for the Spirit of God. As a result, the stewardship of our bodies is a great responsibility.

If we want the Holy Spirit to inhabit our body-temples, we have to make a fit habitation for Him. The unholy, unhealthy habits we frequently entertain prevent His presence from abiding with us. The Spirit of God will not dwell in a temple rundown with poor eating habits or a lack of exercise. A body-temple that gives place to stimulants and other harmful substances does not leave much room for God’s Spirit, and cherished sins and grudges crowd Him as well. The Spirit of God cannot coexist with harmful habits and sin.

The Lord has entrusted the care of our body-temples to us. As stewards, it is our task to make sure our bodies are fit dwelling places for the Spirit of our Lord, and every poor habit or sin we refuse to leave, drives a wedge between us and the Holy Spirit. If we want Him to abide with us, we cannot stay in our current state. We must become new creatures in Christ.
